Atlantoaxial problems

We frequently encounter problems affecting the upper neck bones i.e. the atlas and axis or C1 and C2. These include: tuberculosis; rheumatoid arthritis; congenital anomalies (like osodontoideum); and fractures and dislocations (like Jefferson’s fracture, Odontoid fracture, Hangman’s fracture).

This is a critical area of the spine and treatment options vary from a Cervical Collar, Halo vest application, Odontoid Screw fixation, C1-C2 fixation (Lahiri – Harm’s technique), Transarticular screw fixation (Magerl’s technique) and Occipitocervical fixation.
